Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
