This part of the show deserves every bit of praise it receives. How it manages to drive home a powerful message via personal stories is remarkably effective. It’s hard to watch without experiencing deep outrage and disgust toward the prejudice experienced by service members.

Mixed Messages

The problem is that this powerful narrative forms only a portion of Boots. Other segments appear to glorify army culture to an extent which resembles promotional material.

Although there are moments similar to classic war dramas, such elements are frequently undercut through overly positive dialogue and unrealistic scenarios. Tensions are handled in strangely lighthearted ways, even featuring a food fight reminiscent of light entertainment.

Split Identity

The primary flaw in the series is that its thoughtful along with angry moments get washed away by a desire to copy the model of other hit shows.

As the series continues, it becomes largely a group story centered around an outsider becoming part of a community within a strict military structure. The series also incorporates past episodes to humanize the cast, though they come across as superfluous and poorly integrated.
