Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
