No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
