Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism after their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to addressing the problem.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any priest who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who took the position in spring, has inherited this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate revealed they were victimized by a priest who was later moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they expressed. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents victims and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They noted the Pope was "tender" about their personal story and seemed "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled documents that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," Hickey noted.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they informed the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to strengthen that bond is a step in the right direction," Hickey stated.

They added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
