Beyond recognizing video games in various award categories, TGA formerly highlighted a Future Class initiative. People recognized within the Future Class cohort were designed to embody the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of the games industry, much like how certain annual lists highlight influential figures. Yet, the Future Class designation is coming to an end, per program organizers.

Beyond Simply Honor: The Purpose of the Program

The program was not just a nod to prominent figures in the video game industry. It also served as a nexus for networking and career development. Although certain past members shared appreciation for participating in Future Class, some believed that the program fell short for its cohort. Criticism targeted various aspects of the program, including the lack of assistance to attend the event to providing no compensation for advising new inductees.

Recent Issues and Program Suspension

The program was put on hold in 2024, when The Game Awards left out the recognition from its schedule. This absence followed a 2023 dispute where a number of Future Class participants endorsed a open letter urging the event to employ its stage to express solidarity with an international issue.

"We were given the role of ambassadors of a improved world — therefore, our duty to you and all the players around the world obliges us to speak up," the letter read.

The letter additionally claimed that the gaming industry routinely marginalized certain groups, and challenged professionals in the space to improve.

Official Announcement and Online Updates

While this is the second consecutive year that TGA has not nominated a Future Class, event organizers had not officially announced its end previously. The absence has been noted, in part, due to the apparent removal of any trace of Future Class on the official Game Awards website. The event’s founder and producer was not available for comment to a request for comment.

The Game Awards 2025 are scheduled for Dec. 11.
