The English Team to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground

The England national team will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected entry for a competition taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the playoffs at Everton’s ground.

Tournament Launch and Protest

The tournament was launched at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were heckled as they entered the site by around fifty protesters, who demanded Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Schedule

The first match of the European Championship will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.

Wembley will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to families and help reach a broader range of viewers.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.

The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach the tournament through the standard process.

Locations and Playoffs

The Birmingham venue and The North London arena finalize the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight staged at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“It will be a tournament for the supporters and a celebration of everything we cherish about the sport – its fervor and capacity to unite individuals.”

More than three million passes, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be released to attendees.
