The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
