The climate advocate has speculated that fear of receiving criticism from Donald Trump may have led Bill Gates to row back on his climate crisis position.
Describing Trump as “the most corrupt president in American history”, Gore alerted that the president’s support of fossil fuels and retreat from clean power is “badly damaging” the American economic system.
Climate Damage and Economic Impact
In an discussion at the UN climate conference in Belém, Gore noted, “Trump’s currently causing a lot of damage on the climate. Maybe the biggest harm he’s doing is to the U.S. itself.”
He emphasized that the Asian nation is now selling eco-friendly innovations with a cumulative export value that surpasses all fossil fuel exports from the United States, a trend that is speeding up rapidly.
Bill Gates’ Controversial Shift
The tech billionaire, formerly a leading voice in climate action, recently stated for moving the environmental emergency to a lower priority, to focus on global wellness.
Gore voiced bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate further surprised every climate scientist that I know and respect.”
“Yes, the president approves. It’s possible what Gates was shooting for.”
Gore observed that after the president’s return to office, Gates let go of most of his climate staffers, visited the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.
Fear of Reprisal
Gore theorized that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be worried of facing retaliation by Trump. “It’s possible that he is really worried that the president will target him,” Gore stated.
Trump reacted to Gates’ change of heart with supportive social media posts.
Gore added, “The only rave review of what he put out last week was from Donald Trump. Yes, Trump loves it. Perhaps what Gates was shooting for.”
Rejecting a False Choice
Gore underscored that framing the climate crisis and worldwide health issues as competing priorities is incorrect.
“The idea that there is a either-or decision between health and climate has been roundly rejected by nearly all experts in this area,” he explained.
“It’s completely irrational that governments are requiring citizens to fund the destruction of our collective tomorrow.”
Gore highlighted that the prestigious medical journal released a study on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the significant wellness impacts of inaction on climate.
A Call for Redirected Funding
Instead of taking money away from climate action, Gore argued that Gates should push for redirecting the massive sums spent on fossil fuel subsidies toward wellness and climate solutions.
“Speeding up progress to the environmental emergency is one of the most impactful ways to enhance wellness in the world,” he declared.
Defending the UN Climate Process
Gore robustly defended the UN climate conference process, noting that they achieve significant results than they are given credit for.
“These global meetings acts as a focal point for industry and NGO groups that gather every year,” he remarked. “Numerous groups come up with their own deals that move things forward.”
“These international meetings is one of the key factors that the sustainability revolution has accelerated significantly.”
He continued that businesses and nations are moving forward with innovations and adopting clean power and other low-carbon initiatives.
Optimistic Trends and Shifting Attitudes
Gore highlighted what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the United States, with many people embracing climate action even as the national leadership undoes them.
He warned that Trump might face a “more independent” Congress following recent election defeats for GOP contenders.
“It’s entirely mistaken circulating that somehow we are falling behind.”
Gore commended the progressive politician for his effective campaign for mayor of New York, saying that while he disagreed with some of his proposals, his campaign abilities were impressively on display.
Highlighting Climate Impacts
At the summit, Gore presented attendees with a visual presentation of horrors linked to the environmental emergency.
Standing before a huge projection screen showing pictures of recent disasters exacerbated by global heating, Gore declared, “It is literally insane that we are allowing this to continue.”
He raised his voice while showing visuals of extreme dry spells in the rainforest, melting polar ice, and destructive storms in Vietnam, Jamaica, Brazil, the Pacific nation, and the United States.
“For how much longer are we going to stand by and keep increasing temperatures so that these sort of events get even worse?” he questioned.
Preparing for Climate Impacts
Gore emphasized the need to prepare and prevent, but cautioned that if we allow this insanity—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some impacts will be very difficult to cope with.
Promoting Climate Trace
His primary effort at the summit has been to promote the Climate Trace project, which monitors global warming pollutants and harmful substances causing health problems worldwide.
“We are very excited about these new tools,” Gore said. “We possess the tools and the deployment models. Some people think we lack the government commitment, but as I like to remind people, determination is a replenishable asset.”
