The North London club has confirmed that its disputed sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June this upcoming year.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, estimated to cost around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism stems from accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 rebel group in continuing hostilities in the eastern region of the adjacent DRC.

Months ago, Arsenal faced allegations of issuing a severe rebuff to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to address the sponsorship.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a public entity.

It is widely believed that Arsenal committed to and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

However, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “collectively determined” to go their separate ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” stated an Gunners' release.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing community soccer programs that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches improve their techniques and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, characterized the deal as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “driving forward” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the campaign group Gunners for Peace holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the initial Champions League semi-final match against the French club in April's conclusion.

Demonstrators showed a sign stating “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to hide the partnership emblem on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

In the same month, the French champions renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Simultaneously, the Spanish club entered a new agreement for the same period that has led to the logo being carried on the Spanish club's first-team and women's team jerseys.
