The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
