In a recent development, Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that Washington has outlined a draft peace framework featuring defense assurances for Ukraine lasting for a period of fifteen years.
Key Aspects of the Plan
The Ukrainian leader indicated that during critical discussions with US President President Trump, he had sought security guarantees for a duration of 50 years. Nonetheless, the outlined plan foresees a shorter commitment of fifteen years from America.
The specifics remain undefined what these guarantees would assume, but the president has been advocating for "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, inspired by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's founding principle that an assault against a single ally should be seen as an act of war against every member.
Negotiation Developments
According to Zelenskyy, American defense commitments for Ukraine under the revised 20-point proposal have been fully agreed upon, although the American leader expressed more caution, suggesting the progress was more like ninety-five percent.
The two presidents affirmed that headway was accomplished during the discussions in Mar-a-Lago. Trump, however, cautioned that there were "one or two tough" remaining points, particularly regarding territorial disputes.
Prerequisites for Engagement
On another front, the Ukrainian President informed journalists that a talks with Russian leadership would be possible once the US and European leaders reached a consensus on a peace framework put forward by Kyiv to bring hostilities to a close.
This remark comes in response to Donald Trump remarked to reporters that he believed a meeting involving three parties between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen when conditions are suitable.
Previous Interaction
Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have been without a summit since over five years ago. The most recent talks, brokered by the leaders of France and Germany, aimed to revive efforts to resolve the persistent war.
More recently, in May 2025, the Kremlin leader opted not to go to Istanbul for discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, dismissing a face-to-face meeting suggestion to engage in peace talks in Turkey.
Unresolved Land Disputes
A significant unresolved issue continues to be the status of the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine. The US President indicated that a proposal to turn the area, which is mostly under Russian control, into a DMZ is still not settled.
The President went on to say that it will be apparent in a matter of weeks whether the war can end.
The involved parties have emphasized that the lengthy peace talks would continue as they aim to achieve a final resolution to the protracted conflict.
