The deal grants a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16M for the upcoming season and $17M for the final year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for finishing fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
His deal also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between the U.S. and Japan.
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, enters a emerging lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the division but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, eclipsing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.
International Pedigree
Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that scored teammates for a dramatic one-run win. The next night in the title match against the USA, he blasted a game-tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
