Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the popular program reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
